How Couples Are Shaping the Modern DJ Chart: Insights from DJ Teams
DJ Teams is a CRM built for DJs who want to grow their business while spending less time on administration. One of its most distinctive features is the way it collects and compiles clients’ music preferences, creating a real-time music chart tailored specifically for open-format DJs.
Subscribers can access this data at any time, alongside detailed daily updates covering radio airplay and social media streaming charts. This combination offers DJs a unique insight into what people genuinely want to hear on the dancefloor, rather than relying solely on traditional chart positions.
As we head towards the end of the year, we thought it would be a great time to share some standout statistics and trends from the past 12 months. These insights are driven by hundreds of couples who have used DJ Teams’ “dating app”-style interface to personalise the music for their celebrations.
What the Data Tells Us
Around 60% of the music in the DJ Teams Top 500 comes from the 21st century. Digging deeper, more than 70% of those tracks were released within the last 15 years.
This aligns closely with the demographics of engaged couples today. Many fall within Generation Z, with the oldest members of this cohort turning 30 next year. These listeners would have been in their mid-teens during this period, a time when emotional connections to music are often at their strongest.
Standout Requests from the Last 20 Years
Here are some of the most requested tracks from the past two decades that work brilliantly in open-format DJ sets.
Courteeners – Not Nineteen Forever (2008)
This indie anthem recently broke into the Top 20, becoming the band’s highest-charting single. It received strong support from BBC Radio 1 at release and still enjoys regular spins on Radio X today.

Taylor Swift – You Belong With Me (2009)
A slice of radio-friendly guitar pop, this track has become one of Taylor Swift’s signature songs. Despite only peaking at number 30 in the UK charts, it ranks as the fourth-highest Taylor Swift track in the DJ Teams Top 500.

The Veronicas – Untouched (2009)
The Australian duo scored a number one in their home country in 2009. In the UK, the track peaked at number eight following its second release. If your crowd enjoys artists like Pink or Avril Lavigne, this fits perfectly into the mix.

Sean Kingston – Fire Burning (2009)
Remember Myspace? This track gained serious momentum thanks to the platform and its instantly recognisable hook. While it narrowly missed the UK Top 10, it was huge on radio and a staple in clubs.

Example – Kickstarts (2010)
With pop-leaning lyrics and a hard-edged club feel, this track sits comfortably alongside early Calvin Harris in DJ sets. It reached number one on the UK Dance Chart and became Example’s biggest hit in the official charts. Interestingly, it ranks higher in the DJ Teams Top 500 than his UK number one from the previous year.

Pitbull feat. Ne-Yo – Time of Our Lives (2014)
Mr Worldwide appears six times in the DJ Teams Top 500. This track ranks as his third most popular, behind “Give Me Everything” and “Timber”. Pitbull remains one of the most prolific party artists of the last 20 years—after all, is it really a party without at least one of his tracks?

Oliver Heldens – Gecko (Overdrive) (2014)
This track holds a unique place in UK chart history as the final number one based purely on sales, before streaming was factored into chart calculations. Like many tracks of the era, it also gained wider recognition through its inclusion in a video game soundtrack.
